The city of Kaifeng is located at the eastern part of Henan Province. It is one of the central cities to open to the outside along the Euro-Asia Continental Bridge. With a total area of 6,444 square kilometres and a population of 4.5 million, it administrates five counties, namely Weishi, Qixian, Tongxu, Lankao and Kaifeng, and five districts, namely Gulou, Longting, Naguan, Shunhe and city suburbs. Kaifeng city, directly under the administration of Henan Province, is an industrial and agricultural city and a main commercial trade center in the Huanghuaihai( Huanghe river, Huaihe river and Haihe river valley) area and Longhai Lanxin (Lanzhou and Xinjiang )economic belts.

Kaifeng is one of the seven ancient capitals and famous historic cities. It has a history of more than 2,700 years. It was the capitals of Wei Dynasty (Warring States Period), Later Liang, Later Jin, Later Han, Later Zhou (Five Dynasties Period), Northern Song and Jin Dynasties. So Kaifeng is known as "the Capitals of Seven Dynasties". With its long history, splendid traditional culture, numerous cultural relics and historic sites, Kaifeng is famous in the world. Especially during the Northern Song Dynasty, boasting a population of over one million, Kaifeng was most flourishing with the inner and outer city walls magnificently built, and commodities assembled from all over the world. Kaifeng had established friendship relations with foreign countries from that time. lt was not only a center of politics economy, culture of the whole country, but also one of the most prosperous capital cities in the world. So the city was known as an international metropolis.

Kaifeng is situated at the east Henan plain with a flat terrain, temperate monsoon climate, four seaons, medium rainfall, adequate sunshine. The annual average temperature is 14.24- 14.5¡æ, frost-free period 213-215 days, mean annual rainfall 670mm. The forest coverage rate is higher than the average level of whole China.

Power, Water and Mineral Resources
Water Resources:
Kaifeng city is located at the south of Yellow River with plentiful water resources. The total natural water resource is approximately 800 million cubic meters, The shallow ground water is permitted to extract about 450 million cubic meters per year in average, while the pass flow of the Yellow River is 45.7 1 billion cubic meter per year in average.

Power Supply:
The installed capaicty of Kaifeng Power Plant is about 550 mw, of which Kaifeng consumes 200 mw. The extra power is transmitted into Henan grid system. Also two 125 mw generating sets are being planed.

Mineral Resources:
The information from the geological prospecting and well drilling shows that Kaifeng is rich in petroleum and natural gas resources. The natural gas pipelines from Zhongyuan Oil Field to Kaifeng was installed and put into operation with capacity of 400 million cubic meters per year, which is a favourable condition for developing industry, expecially natural gas chemistry.

Transportation and Telecommunication
Kaifeng has a diversified industrial and a strong industrial foundation. A great number of key state-owned large sized enterprises such as, Valves Plant, Air Separating Equipment Plant, Combine Factory, Instrument Plant, Pharmaceutical Plant, Wool Textile Factory, and so on, occupied an important position in China. At present, Kaifeng has more than 1,970 industrial enterprises. The main industries sectors are light industry, textile, pharmacy, foodstuff, cigarette, electric power, machinery, electronics, chemicals, inetallrugy and construction materials etc. with the light industry, foodstuff, machinery, electronics, chemical industries and pharmacy as pillar industry. Different sized factories support each other, and light and heavy industries developed coordinatly. Wool and cotton textile products, synthetic detergent, enamel wares, Bian embroidery leather, garment, been, chemical fertilizer, valve for power station, AC motor, large sized air separtion equipment and small sized tractor, compound feed etc. are sold well at home and abroad with high reputations.

Agriculture
With the favourable geographic location, natural conditions and complete irrigation infrastructure facilities, the agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, fishery and agroprocessing industries developed vigorously. The five counties and a city suburb, with rich agricultural resources, have become the important production bases of grain and industnal crops in Henan province or even in China. The wheat and cotton output of the five counties has leaped into the first 100 high yield counties in China. The main agricultural produce in Kaifeng is wheat, cotton, peanut, soybean and watermelon, and the production of the watermelon and peanut is ranked at first place in Henan province. Kaifeng is one of the 29 milk goat breeding bases and one of the 26 suburban freshwater fish breeding bases in China. The special local products, such as, Yellow river common carp, Qixian soysauce pickled vegetable, Bianling watemelon, Lankao femiented bean curd, Weishi big green bean, Kaifeng bean curd stick, Zhuxianzhen dried bean curd of five spices, peanut, apple, grapes and paulownia have been long famous at home and abroad. It has a great breeding and agro-processing.

Science, Education, Culture and Health Care
The service network of science, education, culture and health care cover every corner of the urban and rural districts. There are more than 30 scientific research and engineering design institutes, more than 150 scientific information service organizations, more than 140 scientific societies, associations or extension groups of different natural science with a total numbers of 40 thousands technical personnels. In the past several years, more than 1,000 achievements have heen gained, of which more than 400 items have been given rewards by the national, ministrial, provincial or municipal authorities. Kaifeng has the strong capabilities ofcreating, absorbing and developing the advanced technology. Now Kaifeng city has 2,261 different schools including 4 universities and 68 technical schools. Henan University, a famous multi-professional university built in 1912, is situated at the south of beautiful lron Pagoda Park. Kaifeng has a plentiful tourist resources. There are 22 cultural relics which are listed as the state or provincial level protection units and 162 relics hsted as municipal or county level. Most of the cultural relics and historical remains have the characteristics of ancient Song Dynasty with some having the features of the Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties and early Republic of China, which look magnificent, solemn with a well knitted layout. So Kaifeng has been listed as a key tourist city of central China by the State Administration of Tourism. Many ancient tourist spots like Dragon Pavilion, lron Pagoda, Xianguo Temple, Pota Pagoda, Yanqin Taoist Temple, Shanshaangan Guild Hall and King Yu Terrace etc. with distinctive style together with the lakes in the city are very beautiful.
